Casting Call – The Red-Headed League!
Our search for red-headed cast reminds me of an advert in the Sherlock Holmes story the ‘Red-Headed League’ “TO THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE: … there is now another vacancy open … All red-headed men who are sound in body and mind and above the age of twenty-one years are eligible. Apply in person’!
We are making a film about the fallen on a Lincolnshire war memorial to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War next year. We are concentrating on the best documented story and have found an unpublished archive of letters, memoirs and photographs which tell the story of two brothers. Our biggest casting challenge is the fact that the family are all red-heads!
Above: William Crowder aged about 24, red-haired, joined the Lincolnshire Yeomanry.
Above: Grace Crowder (played by Victoria Rigby)
We are also looking for actors in their fifties to play their parents: Anne, slim with thick greying hair and William, average build and a former red-head, now greying. We are also looking for children to play Robert, Grace and William when they were young. We may have to resort to hair dye for adults!
Pauline Loven, period costumier, is working on the period clothing for the film and is writing a blog on the process – the first instalment is on Working with Vintage Patterns:
